The problem with “After” lies in its origins. All of this being said, it is their earnest, heartfelt performances that actually render this movie watchable. If anything, the actors can only be faulted for reading this script and signing onto the project.

It won’t be spoiled here, though, if it were, would it even matter? You will likely see it coming. The entire movie feels like it’s building up to a grand reveal, and when it comes, it is shockingly lackluster. Like many, they are doing the best they can with characters lacking in complexity and a plot that is almost nonexistent. Now, one would be remiss not to absolve the actors of guilt here. A sheltered goody two shoes meets a rebellious heart throb and falls for him instantly? Groundbreaking.

Obviously her eyes are opened by a fiery relationship with Hardin Scott (Hero Fiennes-Tiffin), a stock character bad boy with a British accent and a host of tattoos. The plot centers around Tessa’s discovery that there is so much more to life than the banality of her relationship with her bland boyfriend and the exhaustion of bearing the brunt of her mother’s expectations.

The film’s protagonist is Tessa Young (Josephine Langford), an innocent, rosy-cheeked college freshman, who dresses in pastels and lace to ensure that it is abundantly clear how stereotypically naive she is. On the surface, “After” seems like so many films before it, a guilty pleasure watch: objectively, critically worthless yet fun to watch, and overall, harmless. The game is short, but also cheaper than the first game and considering the writing quality I thought it was well worth the purchase.The problem with the movie “After” is so much deeper than its generic plot. The true ending was very sweet, and to get there you need to manage both Lizzie and John's stressors. I haven't seen all the endings and CGs so far yet, but I have seen a normal ending and the true ending. It can sometimes be difficult to make the choice to not kill people, but you can guide Lizzie toward healthier choices. The game interface itself works on that concept, the colors of the background are brighter in John's presence, and when you make choices sometimes the mouse pointer is drawn towards a choice that Lizzie feels strongly toward. Unlike the previous game, which was from John's perspective, this game is from Lizzie's perspective, and I think the dev did a good job of really putting you in Lizzie's worldview. It was nice seeing Lizzie and John's relationship progress.
